Prof. (Dr) Chittaranjan Narahari Purandare, age 69 years, is a senior Obstetrician and Gynecologist of India, coming from renowned Purandare Family of Gynaecologists serving for over 110 years in Mumbai.
He qualified as MBBS from T N Medical College and Nair Hospital in 1974 and completed his MD in obstetrics and Gynaecology from the same institution in 1978.
He proceeded for further studies and experience to Republic of Ireland and was the first Indian to do MAO (Masters in the Art of Obstetrics) by research from the National University of Ireland. He specialised in Labour analgesia during his tenure in Ireland in the University Hospital Galway, Ireland.
He returned to India in 1983 and practiced at Purandare Hospital Chowpatty in South Mumbai and in Purandare Hospital Andheri west in Suburb of Mumbai. He has been associated with many private hospitals in Mumbai.
He was appointed as Honorary Professor Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Grant Medical College and J J Hospital where he worked for 20 years and has been an undergraduate and Post graduate teacher, training hundreds of students.
He became the President of Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society in 2004 and after working for 4 years as Honorary Secretary General of FOGSI (Federation of Obst & Gynaec Societies of India) became the President of FOGSI in 2009 and President of Indian College of OBGYN. He worked on the Editorial board of the Journal of OBGYN in India – JOGI and held the position of Editor in Chief for 3 years. Currently he is the Emeritus editor of the Journal. He also worked as the Dean Indian College of OBGYN for 9 years and is currently the Emeritus Dean of the College.
Dr. C. N. Purandare has been working tirelessly for women’s health, and maternal health in particular in Mumbai, Maharashtra and India for last 45 years.
He has been honoured by over 14 countries with Honorary Fellowships such as the Royal College of OBGYN UK, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the American College of OBGYN, USA, the Sri Lankan College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, German College of ObGyn, the European College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and many more along with membership of Romanian, French and Colombian OBGYN Associations.
He was awarded the prestigious Dr B C Roy award for medico social work by the Medical Council of India and the Government of India for the year 2009, and Emeritus Professor of the Institute of Research, Moscow, Russia.
Maharashtra Government honoured him with the designation of Emeritus Professor of OBGYN at Grant Medical College and J J Group of Hospitals for life in the year 2020.
He has been awarded numerous national and international awards such as Life Time Achievement Award by FOGSI, IFS of India, Rashtriya Gaurav Award, Laxmibai Adik Award, Ganatra Award and B N Purandare Excellence Award.
He has been the Elected President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (2015-2018), which is the highest OBGYN body in the world – a great honour to be held by an Indian.
He represented FIGO on UN, WHO and PMNCH Boards. He held the office of President of FOGSI, (National Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist of India) in 2009 and Mumbai obstetrics and Gynaecological Society in 2004.
He has delivered over 700 lectures at various meetings in India and abroad and delivered over 30 Orations.
Social Service:
He has been involved in numerous projects and implementation with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare such as EMOc, Audit of Maternal Mortality, Near Miss Review in India, which helped in reducing maternal mortality in the country. Through FOGSI, he has contributed to many Govt of India including Prime ministers Matrutva Suraksha Yojana.
He has been part of many initiatives like cancer detection camp for Mumbai Police, Gynaecological Diagnostic camps all over India, National family planning initiative, OBGYN education seminars nationally.
He was instrumental in suggesting Hydroxy chloroquine for prophylaxis and plasma therapy treatment for serious Covid 19 patients which was approved by ICMR saving Lives.
He has over 120 publications to his credit and his research Review article on Covid 19 in Pregnancy was published by international peer reviewed journal JOGR in June 2020.
His Contribution to medical education during his tenure as Hon Professor of Grant medical College Mumbai and free service to patients of J J Hospital Mumbai for more than 20 years is commendable. He has taught thousands of undergraduate medical students and hundreds of post graduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology students who have been asset to the country.
His contribution has been huge in the field of OBGYN, and his great concern and dedication for the needs of women’s health in Mumbai, Maharashtra, rest of India and globally. His knowledge, experience and administrative skill has been a great asset for improving medical education and promoting Universal health care world over.
